Rebuilding after Earthquake

CWEF scholarship recipient Xingxiu is a 17-year-old eleventh grader at Zhaoyang Number 1 Middle School in Zhaotong.

She is from a small farming village, about 70 kilometers away from Zhaotong. It takes about 2.5 hours to get to her village, so Xingxiu is a boarding student and only goes to her hometown during the winter and summer holidays.

Xingxiu’s home county was hit by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake on August 3, 2014. Her family suffered a great loss during the earthquake. Xingxiu’s family home was made of earth, and it collapsed during the earthquake, burying all of the family’s possessions and livestock. Thankfully, Xingxiu’s parents and younger sister and brother were not hurt during the collapse.

Since the earthquake, the family has been living in two tents; one tent for cooking and another is a bedroom. Other families in the village have started reconstructing their homes, but Xingxiu’s father said the government subsidy is not sufficient to rebuild their home.

Xingxiu’s parents do their best to support all three of their children’s education, and are so grateful for the kindness of CWEF’s donors in helping Xingxiu complete her studies. They hope Xingxiu will be admitted by a good university when she graduates from high school in the summer of 2017.
