What is service learning?
Service learning is a research-based teaching method. Learning is applied through action to address an authentic community need in a process that allows for individual initiative and provides structured time for reflection on the service experience as well as demonstration of acquired skills and knowledge. (adapted from The Complete Guide to Service Learning by Cathryn Berger Kaye)
CWEF, and its predecessor CWES, have been leading students and learning teams to program sites in China and Cambodia since 2001. Teams help dig trenches for drinking-water systems, teach villagers about how to use water filters, act out skits teaching about germ transmission and good sanitation practices, complete needs-assessment research necessary for setting the foundation for successful health and education programs, teach English and Art, lead eyeglass clinics, and more.
